Good afternoon, I wanted to take the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is PC Jack Gregory, and I am the new Neighbourhood Beat Officer for Castlefield. I am taking over from the excellent PS Mo Riaz, who has moved on to a Sergeant's role here at Town Hall Police Station. I know what a fantastic job Sgt Riaz has done for the area, so I certainly have big shoes to fill. By way of background, I have built up a good amount of experience policing Manchester City Centre, having been based at Town Hall Police Station since October 2023. During that time, I was responsible for the Commercial District, covering a large area including Spinningfields, Deansgate, the Cathedral and the Arndale. However, I am really excited to take on this new challenge and begin working on what is a fantastic neighbourhood beat. My first official day in the role was yesterday, and I spent much of it carrying out proactive foot patrols across the area. During one patrol, I encountered a male acting suspiciously and asked him to account for his presence. Rather than engaging with me, he immediately ran off and jumped feet-first into the Bridgewater Canal. Additional officers attended to assist, and a Perry lifeline was deployed to help the male, who was wading through murky, waist-deep water. Despite our efforts, he refused assistance and instead swam to the opposite bank. Believing he had successfully evaded police, he climbed out of the canal and attempted to make off, only to be met by officers who had positioned themselves nearby in anticipation of his escape route. The male was successfully detained, and subsequent checks revealed that he was a wanted individual. He has now been returned to prison. I look forward to working with residents, businesses and partners across Castlefield in the coming months, and I hope to meet many of you in person soon.
